Great Fishing at Tarryall Creek Ranch

2010 FISHING REPORTS

8/09/10 - The water has receded and conditions are great at Tarryall Creek Ranch. Hoppers, caddis and red quill mayflies are abundant right now.

8/06/10 - I took my son-in-law, a novice fisherman, fishing on Tarryall Creek near Como on Aug 6 and we had a wonderful day. We fished the east end of the property due to the open areas that allow for easy casting. We caught a lot of fish, several of which were a very decent size. There was plenty of water in the creek and the open areas allowed Matt to practice and gain confidence in his casting. This is a great program. I plan to try some of the other properties in the near future. Keep up the good work!

7/25/10 - We had many strikes on hoppers and other dries, and hooked a fair number of browns on the east side of the highway. It was a great time.

7/24/10 - Fished the west side after a great breakfast at the Como Depot. A few PMDs and green drakes were hatching so we tried different mayfly patterns. After switching to a royal wulff, we caught one nice brown after another for the next three hours. Based on several trips here, this might be the best South Park lease!

7/23/10 - Four of us worked the west side with dries and released about 80 browns while missing many others. Several of our fish were 12-14" and very well fed. By the time we got over to the east side, the hatches were over for the day.

7/18/10 - Four anglers released many browns on a variety of dry flies. Said that bigger fish are on the west side of the highway. Definitely will be back.

7/11/10 - We had a great day on Upper Tarryall. A 3 wt and a couple of dry flies was all that was needed. Fished the lower section and about half of the upper section. I think the upper section has bigger fish, but lots of willows too. Parachute Adams, PMD's, and yellow humpies were the ticket. The fish were spooky, but a well presented fly in a nice riffle or pool often did the trick. It was a blast.

7/08/10 - Fishing at Tarryall Creek was slow until about 10 am. Then it was fish after fish on dries. Size 14 stimulator and caddis.

7/03/10 - Great day of fishing on a nice property.

6/27/10 - Stream conditions are now optimal at Tarryall Creek Ranch near Como.

5/16/10 - The water was beautiful and fishing was good. Two of us landed many browns in the 8-13" range on various beadhead nymphs. We also spooked many others because the water is so clear and the fish are everywhere.

5/14/10 - Friday was great in the morning on Tarryall Creek Ranch. Three fishermen caught 50 fish between 10am and 1pm. Mostly 8-12 inches one about 15 inches. First one on a # 12 Parachute Adams all the rest on bead head Prince nymphs size 12-16. Caught 10 more in the afternoon before weather turned bad.

5/08/10 - Fishing doesn't get any better than this before runoff. Released about 60 browns and only changed flies after my nymph was down to thread. Several fish were 12-13 inches. Small stonefly or prince nymphs are all you need right now.

2009 FISHING REPORTS:

8/23/09 - Water was very low but still caught about 40 fish on yellow hoppers. The challenge is casting into pockets that are about three feet square without being seen.

8/09/09 - This is great water for beginning anglers in terms of size, access, and numbers of fish. In the morning, the water was a little off color and the fishing was sluggish. We caught five or six fish between us, all on dry flies, including a 14" brown. The action picked up after that ,and the group caught another 8-10 fish, again all on dry flies, before we went back to the Como Depot for a drink and mid-afternoon snack. Although it did not happen for us, it is obvious that this property could produce days when very large numbers of fish are caught.

8/08/09 - Things were slow in the morning due to cold temperatures and sluggish fish. Hatches started around noon, after which three of us released about 100 browns on the west side using elk hair caddis, small mayfly patterns, stimulators, and various nymphs. Several browns were 13-16 inches, which seemed huge for this little stream. After a slow start, it turned out to be an incredible day!

7/23/09 - Fished the west side (only) and released about 120 bewteen us. Lots of browns were 11-14 inches and a few were larger. The green drake mayfly hatch lasted for hours and we didn't change flies all day.

7/12/09 - We worked hard for each fish we caught, until we made it to the edge of the property. We caught all browns, mostly 10”, The biggest was 13”. No action on top, despite the big March Brown hatch around 11:00am. Many bugs coming off the water, but few fish rising to them. All in all it was a great day, and we did catch about 20 per man. Each and every fish was caught on a prince nymph.

7/11/09 - Couldn't ask for better conditions or dry fly action. Landed over 70 browns in two hours on the west side before the rain started. Only changed flies when our stimulators got trashed. A few fish were 14-15". Lots of hatches including PMDs, green drakes, a large brown mayfly, and yellow sallies.

7/4/09 - We had a great time! Caught several fish and would love to go again someday. My husband's friend, who is a very experienced fly-fisherman, said he had never had such good fishing anywhere near Tarryall before. He's planning to go back with another friend or two.

07/01/09 - The stream is now optimal for dry fly fishing and there are multiple hatches throughout the day. Recent reports indicate that March Brown mayflies, elk hair caddis, stimulators, and prince nymphs are all working great.

5/11/09 - Landed 20 fish throughout the day. The weather was quite windy and the water was high and off-color. Fishing was a little tough but typical for this time of year. Will be back in July.

5/8/09 - Good fishing for this time of year. Water was high but just off color. Large golden stones in the stream and crystal buggers in the beaver ponds enticed about 60 browns, a couple brookies and one large rainbow on the west side of the highway. Fish are holding in areas where the current isn't too fast, including each of the beaver ponds.

5/3/09 - Water conditions were optimal and fish were abundant on Sunday, May 3rd. Three anglers fished the west side (only) and released about 30 browns on Prince nymphs and golden stonefly nymphs.

2008 FISHING REPORTS:

9/27/08 - Wow, that was great! Definitely the most fun I've had on the leased properties. We fished for 10 hours, and caught fish all day. Mostly dries, stimulators, para adams, caddis, mayflies, but also green copper johns, and prince nymphs. We had hits on everything. I used my 1 weight, and my buddies had 3 weights, the average fish was 11+ inches, and we got into some 17 inchers. Mostly browns, but we caught some fat brookies also. What a blast, thanks again.

9/10/08 - We started at the lower lease boundary and caught countless fish in the riffles, pools and pockets, all on dry flies. Many browns were in the 12-15" range and one brown was 16". Some larger browns were in the shallow riffles but didn't appear to be spawning. West half produced more fish but they were bigger on the east side of the highway. It was a wonderful day of dry fly fishing, even with low water. Thanks for suggesting this lease.

8/31/08 - Our boys enjoyed learning to fly cast without getting hung up. I did well on the east end; caught several nice fish and spooked many others. Water is low but still fishable. We never made it to the west side.

8/24/08 - Great day! A little slow in the morning but it picked up on dries in the afternoon. Caught several nice browns in the 9-10 inch range. Will be back!

8/19/08 - Phenomenal...one of the top five fishing experiences in my life! I hiked down to east end and fished back to the car. Caught fish averaging 12 inches in every pocket and pool, some were 15-16 inches.

8/10/08 - Phenomenal day...can't wait to book again.

8/01/08 - Fishing was fun...we really had a good time. Three of us hop-scotched upstream from the lower (east) boundary during the morning. Each of us had caught a couple dozen fish by noon. The lower (east) side was easier to fish and therefore more fun for me. The west side was more difficult and I only fished about two-thirds of it before I walked back to the car. We will definitely be back and next time we will have breakfast at the Como Depot.

7/27/08 - Caught more fish than we could count. We probably caught more fish on the west side but they were bigger on the east side. Definitely seems like this property hasn't been fished for a long time. Walking was strenuous across the east meadow due to wetlands. Fishing was tough on the west side due to willows and narrow channel. Dries and droppers worked during multiple hatches all day. Excellent day...we loved it!

7/19/08 - Three of us released about 150 browns and one brookie on this new lease! Not much on the surface but constant action on small beadhead nymphs. Largest fish was about 13 inches but many were 10-12 inches. The west side is much tougher to fish than the east side. Horses startled us in the willows on the west side.

7/12/08 - My wife and I relased about 200 browns and one brookie in three hours of fishing on the east side of the property (then she got bored). Most were 10-13" but a few were 14-16". Haven't found another property where you can have so much action before lunch!
