While this lease is shorter in length than our other Tarryall Creek properties, it has the most complex habitat and greatest fish holding capacity of any lease. The upper half (near Ute Creek) is characterized by fast riffles that feed deep canyon pools. Here, boulders, overhanging branches and a steeper gradient make wading and casting more difficult, but offers great pocket water fishing in the riffles. An impressive population of fish (mostly wild browns) in the 8 to 15 inch range are distributed throughout the property, with even larger fish in the deeper pools. Several anglers have released 18-25 inch browns and rainbows on this property. The stream should be worked very thoroughly, as it isn't always obvious where the fish are holding. Ideal for one person but suitable for two anglers who are willing to leap frog upstream.
CONSERVATION
Ute Creek Ranch has been identified as a "reference" property for stream restoration projects throughout the Tarryall valley. This means that ideal habitat conditions serve as a model for how other stream sections should look and function after restoration. To preserve its pristine habitat conditions, Ute Creek Ranch is now protected by a conservation easement held by Colorado Open Lands.
Lightning is a real hazard and shelter is limited. Fast riffles, slick rocks and deep pools can be dangerous, especially during periods of high water. There are no restroom facilities on the property.
There are no sanitary facilities on this property. The nearest public restrooms are located at Tarryall Reservoir (upstream) and Twin Eagles Trailhead (downstream) on County Road 77. Other services are available in Lake George and Jefferson. Please plan accordingly on the day of your arrival.
